Why Asiniikaa?

Understanding that we are ALL Treaty People, we live and work in the Robinson Huron Treaty and the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850.  With this understanding, we must acknowledge and honour the land that we are on.  It is incumbent upon us to respect these lands and the Indigenous people who were here long before us.

Indigenous people often have profound and special connections to, and identification with, lands and waters and these are tied to their physical, spiritual, cultural, and economic well-being. They also have valuable traditional knowledge and experience in managing the environment in a sustainable manner. We honour and respect the perspectives that First Nations people hold towards their rights, interests, connections to lands and waters, and the perspectives of traditional practices. We understand the cultural and traditional connection that First Nations people have towards preserving and sustaining their land for their people of today and the seven generations that are to come.

Our approach to relationship building with First Nation communities is grounded in respect. We respect and understand the rights of Indigenous Peoples. We respect cultural differences. We understand and appreciate the ongoing impacts of colonialism and its influence on engagement and partnership.
